Construction Method
The hull is designed for fully welded aluminum construction. The simple jon boat geometry keeps the fabrication process relatively straightforward while still providing a strong and durable structure for regular fishing and utility use.
Accurate measuring, plate fitting, tack welding, and proper weld sequencing are important during construction to maintain hull alignment and minimize distortion.
Difficulty Level
Difficulty level: Medium.
This project is recommended for builders with basic aluminum fabrication and welding experience. Previous boat-building experience is helpful but not essential if the builder is comfortable working with aluminum plate and understands standard welding procedures.
Fishing and Utility Layout
The interior provides useful open floor space for fishing gear, passengers, and equipment. The optional livewell makes the design particularly suitable for anglers, while the portable fuel tank keeps the fuel system simple and easy to service.
The combination of a wide hull, practical floor dimensions, and moderate engine requirements makes the 1648 a versatile choice for fishing, recreation, and general-purpose use.
